Abstract:This talk will discuss a few technologies enabling compact smart sensing. We will start from CMOS based imager technology and wide dynamic range imaging. We will review a few solutions proposed to expand the dynamic range of an image, doing so with minimum penalty on image resolution and on image sampling rate. We will continue with other technologies, specifically optical coated filters, enabling compact devices such as lab on a chip for neuron monitoring, and other applications. We will also discuss tone mapping for display of wide dynamic range images in a hardware efficient way and compare with other algorithms currently available. Time permitting, other compact sensing technologies for medical monitoring and diagnosis will be discussed.
Biography: Prof. Orly Yadid-Pecht completed her D.Sc. in the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology in 1995. She was an National Research Council (NRC) Fellow till 1997 at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) / California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in the US. She then joined Ben-Gurion University (BGU) in Israel and initiated the VLSI center in 1999 at BGU, which became a national center of excellence. In 2009 she became an international centre of research excellence (iCORE) / Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF) Chair at the University of Calgary, Canada, in the area of Integrated Sensors. Prof. Yadid-Pecht has also been a coach since 2015, and in 2018 she initiated a workshop titled “From Lab to Fulfillment” supporting entrepreneurship, and offered to female faculty at Universities worldwide.Prof. Yadid-Pecht is the co-author of the first book on CMOS image sensors: “From Phototransduction to Image Processing”, an author of over 200 publications, and has an H index of over 30. She served as a board member on many IEEE transactions journals, IEEE and SPIE program committees and other international committees. She was the general chair of the IEEE ICECS held in Israel in 2004.Prof. Yadid-Pecht is an IEEE Fellow since 2007, an SPIE fellow since 2015 and an AIMBE fellow since 2018. In addition, Prof. Yadid-Pecht holds more than 30 patents, most of which are licensed to companies and creating revenues. She is currently involved in two companies in Calgary, and coaching students and faculty regarding entrepreneurship and starting their own companies.
