Abstract:With the capability of low power, highly integration, and miniaturization, the IC industry can contribute more and more to the biomedical applications. In this talk, two related projects will be introduced. The first is to build a patient-centric environment (collaborated with National Taiwan University Hospital). Currently, we have finished an energy efficient prototype and flexible cloud for diagnostic grade mobile ECG monitoring. The prototype uses a mobile phone as a gateway to transmit the measured ECG data back to the medical cloud. Therefore, the patients are not tied to the hospital or home, and can go outside for common life. The prototype can calculate on the mobile phone the RR intervals. More accurate RR, QRS interval can be obtained from cloud. The platform can also analyze the non-linear analysis of heart rate variability in patients with congestive heart failure based on multi-scale entropy. The second project is for Parkinson’s disease (PD) research and is collaborated with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. We first developed a mobile device for real time recording, and then we will try to find the deterministic biomarkers for the FoG in PD. Last but not least is to develop the on-demand closed-loop stimulation scheme based on the results from the experiments. Currently, we have built a platform for rat experiments.Biography:Hsi-Pin Ma received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University, Taiwan, in 1995 and 2002. At the summer of 2000, he interned at Siemens Telecommunication Systems Limited, for feasibility study and establishment of a dual-mode base station for WCDMA and cdma2000. Since 2003, he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering/Institute of Communications Engineering, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, where he is currently as Associate Professor. Dr. Ma’s research interests include communications system design and SoC implementation, power efficient/energy efficient signal processing, and biomedical signal processing and system applications. He has published 11 journal, 52 conferences papers, and 2 US patents and other international patents. He also participated in IEEE 802.16m standard contributions with ITRI and has submitted 15 contributions. He also has three cases of technology transfer to the industries. Dr. Ma is an IEEE member since 1998, COMSOC member since 1999, SSCS member since 2004, and CAS member since 2005. He serves as a TPC member for IEEE VTC since 2010, IEEE ICC 2011, and IEEE GLOBECOM 2012. He also serves as a TC member for CASCOM in CAS society since 2012. He is also a reviewer for several IEEE publications, including IEEE T-CAS– I and II, IEEE T-Com, IEEE T-Wireless Com, and so on.
