Abstract:Phase transitions are in the center of materials physics research. Across the two-dimensional (2D) interface between two dissimilar materials, phase transitions may behave differently from in the three-dimensional bulk. Understanding the phase transitions across materials interface would open tremendous opportunities in basic science as well as device application. In this talk I will focus on the science and application of the metal-insulator phase transition in vanadium dioxide at the surface and interface. By probing the unusual phase transition under a surface electrostatic field, we discover evidence of existence of 2D electron liquid. By interfacing vanadium dioxide with other materials, we develop a range of novel devices with unprecedented superior performance, including nanoscale solid engine that offers actuation at high speed, large amplitude and high efficiency, and power meter that can be used to directly gauge energy flow at the nano to microscale.
报告人简介:吴军桥博士是美国伯克利加州大学材料科学系终身教授,兼劳伦斯伯克利国家实验室研究员。吴军桥教授1993年毕业于复旦大学,获学士学位,1996年毕业于北京大学,获硕士学位,2002年吴军桥毕业于美国加州大学伯克利分校,获博士学位。2002年至2006年在哈佛大学做博士后,2006年起任美国伯克利加州大学材料科学系助理教授,2012年任终身教授。吴军桥教授的研究方向包括氮化物半导体、氧化物纳米结构、二维材料、以及热电、光伏、微电机方面的应用。吴教授在国际期刊上发表学术论文100多篇,曾荣获美国自然科学基金会杰出青年教授奖,美国能源部杰出青年学者奖等诸多奖项。
